Dutch payment systems producer NEDAP has been chosen by BAA, the managers of Heathrow airport, to supply a new taxi management system that will be rolled out over the next few months. The vehicle identification system, known as TRANSIT, is integrated into a single central server, which uses wireless transponders fitted on the taxis to co-ordinate their deployment throughout the vast airport complex. Because the system works automatically via a central server, it causes the minimum of disruption for drivers working in the busy airport zone, allowing them to concentrate fully on driving. London Heathrow is one of the world's largest airports where more than 7,000 taxis serve almost 60m passengers travelling through London Heathrow each year. The taxi management system will be operational in the summer of this year. The project is an integrated solution of the newest technologies in the area of contact less identification, according to Jeroen Somsen, business unit manager for NEDAP. |
