What Is This RSS All About Then?

Really Quick Non-Technical Explanation

It's a way of making sure you get told the moment there is a new article or feature on our site.

Download a RSS reader like this and then add the URLs of the RSS feed. The rest will happen automatically. The application checks every so often for a new article and when there is one, it will let you know. You can then read the article in full if it interests you.

Slightly Technical Explanation

It's a way of describing news that's available for 'feeding' from an online publisher (us) to a web user (you). RSS uses Extensible Markup Language (XML) - it's basically a framework that adheres to lots of standards which means it will work on lots of different devices - PCs, PDAs, phones etc. It doesn't need Internet Explorer. It doesn't need a PC. A web site that wants to publish some if its content, such as news headlines, or stories, creates a description of the content and spcifically where this content can be found on a site. That information is then registered with any one of a number of online RSS directories - like www.newsnow.co.uk

What do I need to use this RSS thing then?

One of these applications. I am using Net News Wire on my Mac and Sharp Reader on my PC. But there are lots out there, take your pick. Most are free, so you can try a few and see which suits you best.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Not a sausage. Totally and utterly free.

What do I do now?

Download one of the clients, add the URLs of the show you're interested in and away you go. Enjoy this new way of reading news online.
