Traditional software applications require on-site computers systems and usually an on site team supporting them. But a new breed of application that allows access through a browser is causing a bit of a stir. Variously known as Software as a service, On demand computing, hosted or web based services, these solutions usually involve a suppler offering a hosted application which it manages and maintains. Because the client only needs a browser, the new approach does away with up front charges for software licences, hardware and systems integration, instead charging is based on a fee per user per month. The suppliers argue the customers also get the value out of the application earlier, are not troubled by upgrades and can scale the number of users up and down as their business requires.
